Crunk Chris
Cocktail Hour

Legendary Entertainment head Crunk Chris has a string of instrumental albums to his name, and various other aliases too, and the latest continues his tradition of mixing instrumentals from previously released songs (“Yeah Right” is an instrumental from Crunk 23’s Dirty Bling, for example) and new instrumentals (some of which will probably one day feature an emcee). Chris’s success is in his unusual drum sounds and his strange samples choices, opting for anime sound effects, birds, startled human voices, and Darth Vader’s respirator, amongst many others, to stand in for instruments. It contributes to his unique sound, self-labeled as Canadian Crunk, a sort of industrialized hip hop with a twist of electronica. While his songs could use a few more change-ups, Chris keeps switching up the styles with 35 short-ish songs from loungy jazz (“A Slow Dance For Desert,” “Finet” ) to tribal dance (“Boatride At Nitefall,” “Calm Nite”), space rock (“Woman-Eyez” ) to disco (“70’s Cocktail”), and his always excellent examples of robots trying to imitate Stomp (“L’apatif,” “Sea Grape Vintage,” “Rogue” and more). While Crunk Chris might not appeal to everyone, Cocktail Hour is good for that sunset siesta, a smoke-out session, or a freestyle session for emcees looking for some variety. [Thomas Quinlan]
