Brzowski and Moshe
Like Woe

Moshe’s moody, morose production is a perfect backdrop to Brzowski’s morbid, self-destructive lyrics, so much so that it’s surprising it’s taken these two Portland residents almost a decade of working together to finally get around to recording their first joint release, and that only because of a European tour they were prepping for. And at only five songs long, it’s also pretty short even for an EP. Still, better to leave the fans wanting more and not overstay your welcome. The title track engages listeners with a melancholy beat heavy on violin, peppered with plinking piano and bookended by downer movie dialogue. Brzowski’s choice to use a traditional rap style for his raps about a man at a crossroads makes for one of the album’s most accessible songs (the other being dark pop song “A Dog Called Cirrhosis”), a makes for a great choice to open the album. They follow that with “Entrail,” where Moshe’s creepy, horrorcore beat inspires Brzowski to sing for much of it, and for “The Coming Plague” Moshe delivers another creepy, horrorcore track (but much more minimal) and Brzowski uses this late album opportunity to reveal his more usual arrhythmic lyrical onslaught. Bonus track “Spine” is separated from “The Coming Plague” by a good minute of silence, probably because it is more uptempo and lo-fi than the rest of the EP, but it’s worth the wait: “Spine” shines thanks to a crazy guest verse from K-the-I??? Fans of Fake Four or early Mush and Anticon would do well to seek this out. [Thomas Quinlan]
