Royal-T & The Dirty Sample
Cognitive Ability

The Dirty Sample loves a dusty beat. Static. He likes soul samples, too. But what’s best about a Dirty Sample beat is his ability to surprise, whether it be with his sample choices or in how he combines them. On Cognitive Ability, a collaboration with Royal-T, a favourite emcee of his, The Dirty Sample brings the heat with almost every beat, including both interludes, but “Came To Crown” and “Rainy Day In Winnipeg” are kind of generic for him. It’s much better when he flips those expectations on their ear, as he does on “I Know.” But The Dirty Sample doesn’t deserve all the flack for “Came To Crown,” as Royal-T’s “king of rap” lyrics are, frankly, beneath him. “Rainy Day” gets a pass for T’s heartfelt lyrics about his new hometown, a “BC Trees” for Winnipeg, if you will. Better are his raps promoting scientific thought (“For the Gifted”), his attack on tattletales with Touch and Apeface (“Snitch”) and his struggles as an impoverished rapper (“I Know”). His basic braggadocio is also fairly cerebral, as displayed on both “The Big Boom” and “The Big Ill.” Being most familiar with Royal-T as a rapid-fire rapper, I was also impressed with his slower flows, which show up quite often here alongside his short bursts of tongue-twisting speed. Fingers crossed for this as just the beginning of a long and productive collaborative partnership. Plus, like the rest of The Dirty Sample catalogue, Cognitive Ability is available for free at label website WorkTurkeyMusic.com. [Thomas Quinlan]
