Fortunato
Broken Bones Shattered Dreams

With two albums, two mixtapes and an EP released since 2007, rap duo Angerville obviously work well together. But Fortunato’s solo projects offer the rugged rapper an opportunity to explore more personal themes and concepts, even if Conscious Thought remains a major participant. For Broken Bones Shattered Dreams, his second solo album, Fortunato’s only other guests are Calgary’s Deezus on smooth love ballad “Beauty” and Edmonton’s Touch on dramatic battle track “Fighting Words.” Nice to see some Megacity love for Alberta. Fortunato’s previous solo, The Grocer, was an epic concept of working man blues dominated by centrepiece posse cut “15 Minute Break,” but BBSD is more varied in subject matter, such as Fortunato’s stab at the evolution of a psycho as told in the first person (“Dark Passenger”), his nostalgia track (“Back In the Day”) or his warning to two-faced “snakes in the game” (“Madison County”). Yeah, it’s still dark, but the producers provide jazzy, soulful beats to compliment the introspective songs about loss and disappointment, and BBSD opens strong with Gamshooter’s fist-pumping beat for “Life Altering Event” and City Parks’ creepy, synthetic orchestra for “Dark Passenger,” both a little different from the rest of the album. The album is also bookended by two great biblical passages that should be heeded by all. Angerville prove they have the talent and drive to succeed in this business, and Fortunato’s Broken Bones Shattered Dreams is another fine addition to the payment of those dues. [Thomas Quinlan]
