O-Parts 3: The Best of O-Parts

| |
|
A Japanese record label specializing in experimental electronic music and hip hop, O-Parts have released the third volume in their series of sampler-style compilations. All 12 songs are instrumentals. I must confess a usual disinterest in electronic-made instrumental music. It can very easily be repetitive (and better made for a vocalist) or self-indulgent (and ultimately too long and boring). With only two songs under the five-minute mark, a few of these songs could do with some edits, although even the “short version” of The Buddy System’s extremely slow-to-build “Would Like Some Rain Now” clocks in at almost eight minutes. Still, it’s more exciting than what amounts to little more than a five-minute loop for DJ Daikei’s “Abstract Moog Sounds (Experimental Dub Version).” USE’s “Terrace Attack” and Spiritjack’s “Yami&Hikari” are too long, too. Meanwhile, Tha Blue Herb’s O.N.O. delivers dark rave dancefloor scorchers “Notelag” and “Differr,” ORGA represents with glitchy number “zeonic bounce,” and ZERO CHARISMA remixes DJ DAIKEI’s “Gift” with glitch, bringing an old school DJ routine into the mix for his own “Deaf Con 808 (Icaseatic Origin Re-wave).” And let’s not forget DRACO’s “Cyb 5,” so much more than just another Bollywood-influenced hip hop-instrumental. I found a few instrumentals I’d likely return to in the future, but fans of electronic-made instrumental music may get a bigger kick out of it. [Thomas Quinlan]
