Ill Mondo & Neal Rames
Ill Mondo & Neal Rames

| |
|
Bay Area production duo Ill Mondo and L.A. MC Neal Rames combine their individual styles and talents for a successful collaboration that mines the past to create a new, exciting hip hop release. Neal Rames has a simpler, old school-inspired flow that makes it easy to understand his humourous battle raps and real world stories, at times sounding like D-Sisive at his most rapping-est, as on “Natalie Moore.” The two could probably pull off a pretty nice track together. But that’s for the future. Right now, right here, Rames joins with underground legends like Percee P, Prince Po and Sean Price, and he more than holds his own with these hip hop heavyweights. Sonically, JRK and Johnny Red, together known as Ill Mondo, begin their beats with a hip hop backbone built of live drums and guitar, horn arrangements and the use of vintage music equipment such as the Hammond organ to create a funky 70s vibe to go with Rames’ 90s style. And it works! Their self-titled debut demonstrates how well Ill Mondo and Neal Rames work together, a partnership that will hopefully result in more music together. But if not, fans of throwback rap like Percee P and Edan would be wise to continue to keep an eye out for their respective solo work, too. [Thomas Quinlan]
