Peter Project
Fresh EP

Fresh is the perfect title for this EP of new music from Toronto producer Peter Project. His style is fresh, the music he makes is crisp and clean, and the download card comes embedded in an iPod-shaped bar of soap (to keep you fresh, see?). While his music is rooted in hip hop, his sound borrows from other electronic musical styles, making the music less about big beats with banging drums, concentrating instead on creating constantly changing instrumentals with layers of samples so deep that repeat listens are rewarded as yet more buried sounds reveal themselves. In other words, Peter has an exquisite eye for detail. It’s the perfect way to approach the instrumental music that makes up the 8-bit intro, crazed outro and mid-EP track “The Quest for Extreme Personal Freshness,” but it also works well on vocal tracks, too, never overpowering any of the guest voices. Of those, More Or Les throws down another of his positive wordplay raps on a tea-time hip hop beat for “Unorthodox,” beating everyone to the punch with the first mockery of Kanye West’s Grammy faux pas to be put on album (that I know of). Masia One and Wordburglar also join forces to bitch about working retail with a jazzy hook from Maylee Todd for “In Retail.” It’s a bit short but Fresh still does a good job of highlighting the production skills of Peter Project and the rap styles of some of his most frequent collaborators.
