Something Good
Just Add Water

Rappers Boy-ill and Markit are veterans of the Halifax hip hop scene, most noticeably as half of Hali super-group Fax Four with Spesh K and Quake. Their music can be hit or miss, easily lumped in with the similar sounds that have come out of Halifax since Class took over the city. Their new project with producer Focus Aside and DJ Olympics champ Y-Rush doesn’t break any new ground, either, but Something Good is appealing and they even maintain interest with their debut, Just Add Water. The two emcees demonstrate great chemistry thanks to time spent touring together, mixing Boy-ill’s classic east coast flow with Markit’s wordier new school flow. Focus Aside’s beats are mid-tempo headnodders and fist-pumping anthems inspired by hip hop’s Golden Age, making for some great summertime tunes, and Y-Rush contributes to the hip hop energy with a nearly omnipresent collection of cuts that pulls from everywhere, including Canadian legends like Dream Warriors and Hip Club Groove. They also keep the guests to a minimum, only bringing along for the ride two of Halifax’s best emcees, Quake and Ghettosocks. Just Add Water is an enjoyable album, but it should be interesting to see where Something Good take things now that they’ve expanded the group to include a live band. [Thomas Quinlan]
