Its odd how one man’s thought process turns off even after years of providing some of the world’s finest DJ’s with so much eloquently produced dance music. It would seem that Shem McCauley (Slacker) had gone into hiding but he was actually finding his next source of energy. His move to Thailand sparked a new life of wellness and fitness to mold his mind into the new soul he is now. With this new found hope he emerged from the studio with this brand new atmospheric and down tempo album. Although it is known Shem McCauley created this from no glamorous studio in the mountains or from a fancy mainstream label but all by his lonesome on his own laptop while in Bangkok. Some of his early beginnings came from hip hop and rare groove then he moved into the club and remix work but here we are greeted with a beautiful array of cosmic sounds covered in vocal samples and jazzy spontaneous melodies. A lot of the harmonies and grooves will take you a couple steps back and make you think twice what your listening to and perhaps the sound sand ideas may be rehashed from familiar styles in the 90’s but this is all fresh material. “Just As I Am” slides into a funky groove with strumming guitars and dreamy disco sounds sparkling in the background but it slowly progresses into a dubby trip hop feel. Simple and easy techniques molding all these sounds together can only be harnessed by one such as Slacker. While you could possibly dance around your house in your undies or relax in your favorite chair to all these songs it’s not uncommon to think twice about who you’re listening to. A world of change can definitely do a lot to a soul. I’m glad I took the time to listen to all of these tracks and appreciate what one person can do.
