With legal issues invading on the use of the name Satchel Paige, Elliot Walsh reinvented himself as Nestor Wynrush. His first album under that name touches on his heritage, although he spends more time on the topic with Trinnipeg !78. Songs abound about growing up as a hyphenated Canadian, as do nostalgic tunes about living as such in both Winnipeg and Toronto. The specific details throughout add to the nostalgic power and the realism of the memories. And with poverty, violence, death and loss permeating the lyrics, it's easy to see this album as an example of the blues regardless of production sound, but it's also full of humour and love. And the fact that primary producers mcenroe and soso are masters of dark, introspective beats is an added bonus. Trinnipeg !78 is an album that should resonate with a large portion of North Americans, whether melting pot or mosaic, although an identity crisis isn't necessary to enjoy this album, which is really a sort of audio interpretation of a selection of family's films.
