The Messenger
No Soliciting

Previously known as Hermes the Messenger, the Toronto-based rapper has wisely dropped the Greek god portion in favour of a more universal meaning with his new album (“trimming the fat,” he calls it). Still, nothing’s changed. The Messenger continues to spread his word through a variety of stories, but much of No Soliciting revolves around his time hustling money as a door to door salesman. The album opens with “It Wasn’t Until,” a smooth jam about getting out of the business, but The Messenger also makes the ego-killing theme of sales the subject of “The 5 Step,” which actually goes back to his Day One lessons, “Easy Money,” “Law of Averages” and “The Salmon,” the latter directed more so towards the music industry. He also raps about alcoholism (“Fearless Litre”), girls (“Talk to Me”) and love (“Nicky 9 Doors”). The Messenger is a tight rapper and his lyrics are smart; thankfully DJ Millz provides him with a lot of solid production, although his Japanese-inspired beat for “Everywhere The Devil Isn’t” and his mix of guitar and violin on “What You Say (How You Say It),” a great backdrop for The Messenger’s inspired examples of intimate English, are the two true highlights. Looks like The Messenger has improved his product since his days as Hermes, so now it’s just a matter of how effectively he utilizes his sales skills. [Thomas Quinlan]
