Scripts ’N Screwz
The New Noise

The debut by East Saint Louis duo Scripts ’N Screwz has been out for a few months now, but it’s been a hard one to take in. My initial exposure to them was via video “Brick,” whose misleading animation messed with the subjet matter and didn’t impress in the end. Hearing it without the visuals, the subject of struggle becomes more obvious, and the autotune and funky bass are reminiscent of Digital Underground. The mixture of hip hop convention with experimental elements that embraces electornica, industrial, rock, and R&B makes for an interesting listen, often shattering expectations with each consecutive song. The experiments don’t always work, but highlights like “The New Noise,” “The War Outside,” “Eastwood” and others demonstrate why this album is worth a listen for anyone interested in inspirational experimentations in music. The New Noise took a while to get to, but Scripts ’N Screwz have proved that they deserved a good review a long time ago. [Thomas Quinlan]
