Coates Twice
Supernova

Despite all the heat references on this collaboration album between Toronto-born rapper Chris Quotes (aka Puffy Coates) and Montreal producer Think Twice, Supernova is slow to catch fire. Opening tracks “Heat” and “Supernova” effectively combine smooth vocals over smooth beats with a smooth attitude, but like following tracks “Money In the Rhyme Book” and “The Only Hot Thing,” a few hot lines just can’t ignite these wet, wooden logs. The beats are uninspired and the the mellow music is hardly engaging so early on. “Fresh,” at the midway point, is still mellow, but at least the laidback vibe suits the weed theme, plus the funky synths are groovy. And then come the songs that should have opened the album: “Where’s the Cash At?” is a fantastical futuristic tale over a funky beat of sped-up soul vocals, groovy guitars, cash registers, spacey effects and high speed hi-hats that flirt with the Dirty South; “Just the Tip” and “WeeOoh” take it even further into the club, the former fast and fun while the latter is slower and more menacing. Finally the music is exciting and energetic, and things heat up. At the end, “Tips of My Toes” imitates any number of hipster hip hop club jams, but upends it with braggadocio Star Wars raps, and it all finally fizzles out with bonus track “The Accomplice,” another song we’ve all heard before. Still, there’s a damn fine EP buried in here somewhere with just a little bit of reworking. [Thomas Quinlan]
