Ali The Son Of Abdul
This Is All Imaginary

As a prelude to his upcoming album Imperial Sensation, Ali The Son Of Abdul drops another street album of social, religious and political diatribes on discrimination, colonialism, violence and the controversy surrounding the flu shot, all delivered in a straight-forward, tight flow that is easy to digest. The difficult subject matter can be a tough pill to swallow, but the abundance of fist-pumping, headbanging beats help it to all go down much smoother. While songs like the epic, orchestra-sampling “Smoke In The Sky” and the melodramatic “Am I Dreaming” (both about struggle and hope) will likely appeal to fans of more traditional hip hop, Ali embraces an experimental aesthetic more often than not, pushing the envelope just enough with beats made from strange sample choices and dark sounds, like the accordion sample on “Shine” or some Spider-man show music mixed with hyperactive jazz for “Untouchable Verse.” A poor mastering job results in extreme differences in volume from one song to the next, which can make for an annoying listen under certain conditions, but This Is All Imaginary is still an enjoyable mix of traditional and experimental hip hop that should appeal to a wide audience while alienating very few.
