Kdot-O-Dot
The Life & Times of Lucha Lonely

It’s been almost two years since Rexdale rapper Kdot-O-Dot dropped his debut album Monster, a mix of football hooligan swagger and sympathetic criminal storytelling backed by a gritty soundscape provided by The Arkeologists. With follow-up The Life & Times of Lucha Lonely, Kdot paints a portrait of a broken man with broken dreams. Kdot, like frequent collaborator D-Sisive – who appears again here on “Hellhound (I Love You),” where two tales end in a reckoning with the Devil – delves deep and exorcises his demons with an honesty that makes even fictional characters and situations more believable. And The Arkeologists’s Norman Krates helps capture the mood of Lucha Lonely’s depressing, Andy Capp raps with a brilliant selection of slow soul, funky blues and easy listening that at times almost borders on elevator music. In fact, “Sangrientas Lagrimas” could totally make the mall music cut, while “Whole Lotta Tears” is a doo-wop slow song for the dance floor, “Moonshine Blues” is a soulful braggadocio blues track, and “Waiting For The Devil” has that Wu-Tang vibe. It’s a novel mix, a more successful example of what Aceyalone is trying to accomplish with his genre-splicing series of albums, but The Life & Times of Lucha Lonely is more likely to be heard in an empty back alley bar than in a packed nightclub. Fans of D-Sisive and Modulok will enjoy it. [Thomas Quinlan]
