East Toronto meets East London on the new album by Modulok and Bare Beats, Two Cities.
Two men from the East Side of two different cities on two different continents – Two Cities is a collaboration between Toronto-based emcee Modulok and London-based producer Bare Beats. The alliance couldn’t be more fitting. Just like sometimes two super-villains from different planets have to join forces to wipe the smile of some do-gooder pansy in spandex’s pretty face– Modulok and Bare Beats in their respective disciplines represent a virtual pint-glass-to-the-head of the glitter-rap industry. Modulok might look like a Lebanese skinhead but he’s actually one of Toronto’s most notorious underground emcees, earning his rep as one half of Red Ants and through his collaborations with artists such as Omid, Debmaster and Noah23, to name but a few. Bare Beats is the brains and the bronze between London hip-hop label Bare Records, churning out bangers for some of the UK’s grimiest emcee’s including Smokey, Kal Sereousz and Perry Scaramanga. Now with Two Cities, Modulok and Bare Beats have fused their talents to create a solid album of dusty bare-knuckle boom-bap for the real heads who like their rap raw, rugged and grimey.

Ugsmag.com - Interview December 2007
Urb Magazine (12/2005)
"Red Ants have debuted with a near-flawless merging of Vincent Prices
frantic, fascist marches punctuated by partner Moduloks goose-step
vocal flows. Phobos Deimos is 10 tracks of angry, fist-pumping
anthems of urban rebellion set in a dark, desolate present with
promise for an even bleaker future."
Exclaim! Magazine (10/2005)
"Modulok rages against the machine that is authority, throwing up
graffiti, stealing your girlfriend and serving every runny-nose,
thumb-sucking delinquent on the block in the process. If you think
life is a picnic, be warned that Red Ants have marched onto the scene
with a nearly flawless debut designed to upset the festivities."
Rapreviews.com (01/2006)
"Red Ants make for an adventurous duo trekking decisively towards the
outer limits of the rap world. In an intriguingly bizarre mash-up of
conservative elements and non-conformity, Phobos Deimos has the
appeal of an elaborate b-movie soundtrack, creating harmony out of
seeming dissonance, never leaving tracks stagnant but upgrading them
constantly with often foreign but ultimately fitting instrumentation.
From a hip-hop perspective, Price's compositions are ridiculously
compelling, to the point where they'll have you wondering why
underground hip-hop often sounds so uneventful when so little is
required to breathe new life into it."
Bokson.net (France) (09/2005)
"I was forced to note that these guys do not show any superficiality;
the essence is musical, rather cohesive and remarkable, even more
when one plunges oneself into the ten titles of this first opus
worthy of being called amongst the most effective independent hip-
hop. One could put his hand to be cut that the majority of these
titles were confined to very late nights in a smoked out Canadian pad
and data processing where the sampler is king. "Phobos Deimos", whose
best moments are without any doubt "Symbiotic Killing Fields" and
"Future Imperfect", is full-blown well-produced astonishment, each
title carrying its batch of interest, with the tight flows of MC
Modulok in hand-made musical environments."
Hiphop.ch (Switzerland) (09/2005)
"The duo Modulok and Vincent Price, together Red Ants, earned this
review even thoughin accordance with our knowledge the CD is not
available in Switzerland...Very dark, hard Beats under-paints those
raps of Modulok, which contentwise are also no light foodIn the
Canadian underground itself Red Ants are already well-known and with
their debut album on their own label Seize the Capital! Record,
hopefully they will reach more listeners."
Caribbean Feedback (Guyana) (10/2005)
During the last three years Red Ants have built a loyal cult
following and much indie media buzz from their notoriously hype live
shows throughout Toronto and Ontario, where furniture and egos often
get damagedbeyond repair. But with the release of their debut album
Phobos Deimos on their own Seize The Capital! Records, Red Ants stand
posed to take their proverbial molotov cocktail of grimey rap
realness from Toronto to the rest of the world - and make a permanent
scar on the history of hip-hop."
