On top o' OPOPO

OPOPO - Opopo (EP)

Anyone looking at the above picture and expecting that OPOPO would rip off Daft Punk on their self-titled debut could easily be forgiven. I mean, electronic act, robot masks...it's pretty cut and dried.

Of course, as tends to be the case, one listen to the EP dispels that notion. My knowledge of Daft Punk only goes as far as their radio hits, but I'm fairly certain that the music they make isn't as harsh or pummelling as the six songs on display here. Right from the squelchy throbs of album opener "Clockstop ", it's clear that OPOPO are as interested in punishing listeners as they are in making them move.

Which isn't to say they don't do an admirable job of fulfilling both goals. Songs like "Clockstop", "Computer Menace" and "Wired " may owe a debt to punk, but they owe an even bigger one to dance music. There's no denying the fact that it's incredibly easy to get swallowed up by OPOPO's propulsive rhythms, which in turn makes their EP an ideal (albeit somewhat short) choice for anyone looking for music to move to.
