OK COBRA - OK Cobra (URBNET Records)
Reported by: SCOTT C

You may remember me mentioning the closing of Zulu Records on Bleury, but the owners of the store were quick to point out that they’ve already set up a new operation to supply your needs for hip hop, reissues, future soul and nu-jazz. Cypha Records can be found inside of the City Styles Complex at 1186 Ste-Catherine W., corner Stanley, and I’m sure they’d be happy to see you stop by. If you’ve got questions, call 868-2057.

DJ Ay-Dreahn and friends take a second stab at their roots-and-dub night at Pharmacie Esperanza, this Saturday, June 18. You can slide in the door for no money down and enjoy the vibe at your leisure.

As far as dynamics go, local duo of Fritz tha Cat and RecordFace have no real special powers that immediately come to mind. They do, however, have a new LP out called OK Cobra, which also happens to be the name of their low-key, symbiotic hip hop project. OK Cobra mixes Fritz’s poetic ramblings and the many-splendoured world of Recordface’s production, but you won’t find it on the shelf at HMV. Check out www.okcobra.com, where you can listen to snippets from the new record, as well as order the album online.

I’m a little bit intrigued by a show at Cabaret this Thursday, June 16, called Sugar Session, an all-female music and performance showcase that focuses on soulful ladies that many in this city might not know about. Look for performances from Sabrina Jean, LD-One (Muzion), Soul Sektion, Belle, Susu and many more. Looks like it could be a pretty heavy show, so make sure you get your ticket, $8 in advance and $12 at the door. Doors open at 9 p.m. and the show starts at 10 p.m.

Local musician and composer Artist of the Year is launching his new album Cut Disco at Café Campus this Monday, June 20. Shit starts early with the festivities beginning at 6 p.m, with admission set at $5. For $15, you can walk away from the night feeling a little tipsy because you have a copy of the new CD as well. I’ve been playing a couple of the rough cuts from the LP for a minute, and I’m sure the soulful grooves of the live show will get an equally warm reception. Don’t sleep.

Seven reasons I’m feeling a bit moist....
1. Black Eyed Peas “Like That” (A&M)
2. Hardsteppers Revolution (Fusion III)
3. Blahzay Blah feat. M.O.P. “We Connected” (CDR)
4. Sacrifice “Jay to the A” (CDR)
5. Ciara “Oh” Ghislain Porier remix (CDR)
6. Alexanders Dark Band “Strange Man” (DC)
7. Bonobo Live Sessions EP (Ninja Tune)
