DISTRICT SIX PRESENTS "THE HEART BOOGEY TOUR" WITH TUMI AND THE VOLUME,
ZAKI IBRAHIM, ISIS AND DJ NANA District Six Music is proud to present the much-anticipated "The Heart Boogey Tour", featuring South African hip-hop ambassadors, Tumi and the Volume, alongside acclaimed singer/songwriter Zaki Ibrahim, Nigerian-born, Canadian-raised MC Isis and Toronto's enigmatic DJ Nana. The Volume comprises musicians David Bergman (bass), Tiago Paulo (guitar), and Paulo Chibanga (drums) - performing alongside emcee Tumi Molekane. Collectively, the three musicians generate a synergy that is conveyed as innovative musical pastiches and explorations. With an acute sense of observation, and a God-given gift for translating experience into rhyme, Tumi rounds up the collective artistry of the group. Tumi and the Volume bring a contemporary South African flavour to the genre with influences from rock to hip hop, dub to Afro-jazz. Representative of post-apartheid South Africa - black, white, and brown skin tones with a dash of different faiths - the members of the group are equally as diverse in their musical backgrounds, influences, and expressions, and are equally responsible for the composition of the music they perform. Building on the success of two previous visits to Canada (in February and September 2005), Tumi and the Volume are back by popular demand. In February 2005, the group was invited to headline alongside Somali-born K'naan for the "African Way" tour. At the time, they were relative unknowns in North America, but managed to leave a lasting impression on the hundreds of people who attended their performances. Those shows were the spark that started a wildfire of word-of mouth recommendations, and later on that year Tumi and the Volume returned to Canada to warmer weather and a much hotter reception. Internationally, their talent has led to them appearing on stages throughout Africa, Europe, and North America - alongside the likes of The Roots, The Cardigans, Coldplay, Blackalicious, Black Eyed Peas, and Massive Attack, among many others. This year, Toronto-based label District Six Music (www.districtsixmusic.com Twenty-five years, four continents, and several generations in the making, Zaki Ibrahim's music is captivating and vibrant. It's thick with poetics, and steeped in a delicious mixture of earnest emotion and humor. She has worked with a broad family of Canadian and South African musicians, composers, and producers, including Juno Award-winners Kemo (Rascalz) and DJ Serious (Quartertones), as well as sharing the stage with Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), Ladybug Mecca (Digable Planets), Bahamadia, Tumi and the Volume, K'naan, Pocket Dwellers, and more. This year has been an explosive one for Zaki, as she gets set to drop her debut album on the world by early 2007. Two singles, "Grow" and "Daylight" (released under the Treehouse label in the UK) will be making their rounds internationally in May 2006. She has just been chosen to headline Canada's first official Beat Society, performing alongside Jane Bunnett, Muna Mingole, and The Spirits Of Havana, as part of "Global Divas" - a gala event showcasing unique and captivating female vocalists from around the world. It's a skillful emcee who can draw their listeners into their experiences, but it's a rare one who can use her beats and lyrics to bring the crowd's imagination to life. This is what Isis does every time she picks up the mic. Using her background as material for her lyrics, she elevates her artform to new heights and in turn is re-defining the Canadian hip-hop scene. Isis' focused energy, sheer skill and talent on the mic has turned her into one of the most sought-after performers in Toronto. As one of the first Canadian artists ever to perform at the Apollo Theatre in NYC, we expect good things ahead for this fiery MC. DJ Nana is a self-described artist, deejay, performer, producer, music supervisor, promoter, and entrepreneur, who has become a pillar of the Toronto music scene. His impressive list of credits includes long-standing residencies in Toronto and Montreal, as well as sharing the stage with The Roots, k-os, Saul Williams, and K'naan.
