Ever moving, and passionate, DJ NaNa (Nana Jr. Gyamfi-Kumanini) is now one of Toronto's most renowned and cutting edge DJ's. Waterloo born and bred, NaNa moved to Toronto in the summer of 1999 to attend York University. Since then he has created a name for himself in the music scene earning a powerful reputation as one of the best DJ's in the city.
It is clear through The World Inside My Head that NaNa has many influences ranging from hip hop, to soul, to jazz, to electronica, to reggae and also to traditional African music. He is not afraid to break away from expectations and boundaries and help us (the listeners) grow by discovering the new and rediscovering the old rhythms that fuel our own passion for music.
The album starts off with classic samples that reflect his earlier influences and progresses to reveal some local Toronto talent which confirm NaNa's official approval. The most refreshing thing about the album is that NaNa is not afraid to be "different" and really stresses the importance of not being able to expect what's next.
"People need to start opening speaking out about the things they like and enjoy," he urges. "We need to make a habit of embarking on new experiences whenever we can, whatever it is. Of course, this is just my perspective as an artist and I don't expect anyone to fully embrace it. But all I ask is for people to stay conscious and to be open to new things."
