MINDBENDER - Mental Reverse/Spiritual Rebirth
Reported by: na (February 12, 1999)

Nestled deep in Toronto's hiphop underground and well out of reach of those hoping to cash in on the burgeoning scene, Supreme Being Unit represents hiphop most abstract, riffing on beats and rhymes that make Company Flow's most complex cuts sound like a Mase chorus.

The brain-scrambling Mental Reverse/Spiritual Rebirth disc isn't likely to win SBU any Juno nominations, but that's probably fine by them. Over sparse breaks and dirty scratching, rappers Psychology the Mindbender and Overstand the Conspiracy flex densely on antiauthoritarian conspiracy theories, time travel, alien transmissions and the general lack of creativity in the hiphop scene. The flurry of words takes several listens to unscramble and leaves similarly inspired rappers like Aceyalone and De La Soul coming off short of breath by comparison. Smart stuff in a genre where knuckleheads often rule the till. SBU host the Comfort Zone Friday.
