J-BRU - Identity Crisis
Reported by: Eric Lewis CD Spins

You might not know it in Moncton, but hip hop is alive and well on the East Coast of Canada. Classified has had nationwide hits and videos played on MuchMusic, and if it's not starting already, his friend J-Bru should be hot on the heels of that. This is Bru's fourth release, and it is a polished, well- written, street smart hip hop album. No patting himself on the back, no bling, no idle threats or making fun of celebrities just because that's the cool thing to do. It's a soulful album of songs about love, friendship and hard times. There are sweet ballads like "I Love You Ma" and "It Doesn't Matter", really fun, dancable tunes like "Help! I Been Robbed" (with appearances by GhettoSocks and Jay Bizzy) and moments where Bru questions the motives of other rappers ("50 Cent clones ...") like on "Underground MC Pt. II" (featuring Mic Boyd). "Put My Work In" is another standout.

If you're used to mainstream hip hop, you really should check this out. The latest mindless club hit might not be here, but in its absence, you will find some soul and some substance. A great listen.
