Ladybug. Doodlebug. No, those aren’t the names of characters in the latest Pixar venture, but the monikers of three of the most influential figures in ’90s hip-hop the Massachusetts formed trio known as Digable Planets. The group’s stunning 1993 debut, Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space) fused hip-hop with jazz samples from Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins and Curtis Mayfield. The result was a laidback journey that opened the eyes and ears of a generation of music fans, much like De La Soul’s debut, 3 Feet High and Rising, had done four years previous. “Reachin’” even birthed a Top 20 pop hit, “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)” and a Grammy (for Best Duo or Group). After a tour with a live band backing them, the Planets unleashed another highly acclaimed album, Blowout Comb, but “creative differences” eventually drove the trio apart. Butterfly, Ladybug and Doodlebug have remained somewhat active musically, but an announcement in 2005 revealed the three have reunited to work on a new album and reunion tour.
