Bio
In 1975 Jeff was produced by his parents in Warsaw Poland, but moved to Sweden in 1981 and lives since then in Malmoe Sweden. Jeff who was formerly called Mike Pung has been involved in electronic music since 1992 but it all began as a bedroom thing that has since then evolved into a habit.
He started creating music in 1994 and got hooked on it directly, but it took until 1998 before his first single was to come out on his own label Maskros Music. Since that single he has released over 35 singles on labels like Poker flat, Episode, Treibstoff, Intrinsic design, Konvex Konkav, Jamayka, Morris audio, regular etc. The first album by Jeff Bennett got released in the beginning of the summer 2003 on Episode.
In 1994 he and a partner opened a record store called Cosmic One Records that became the first electronic record store in Malmoe. With the opening of the record store the DJ career got a boost and he started playing on various venues.
A year after the store was opened Jeff & his record store partner Jim Groovy started making their own one-off parties and clubs in various sizes. His longest residency was in a house club called Thank God It's Friday were he played almost every Friday for over a year. He has played at clubs & parties like: Fabric (London), Otto zutz (The edge, Barcelona), Fusion festival 2002 (Germany), Ostgut (Berlin), Terrys cafe (Frankfurt), PolarTV (Berlin), Barracca (Spain), The Loft (Spain) + many more.....
In 1996 Jeff & Jim started their first label Azurite records. Jeff started his own label Maskros Music in 1998. And the year 2000 two new labels called Phunctional & Kung fu dub we're started by Jeff. The only label that is still alive from that era is Kung Fu dub, which has recently been frozen up from its 3year sleep with some nice upcoming releases and remixes.
After moving on from the record store Jeff decided to move to Oslo/Norway for new inspirations. After 6months of Norway the path towards Malmoe/Sweden was once again the choice and this is the base of Jeffs whereabouts until further.
Influences:
The earliest influences came from Detroit people like Derrick May, Juan Atkins & Kevin Saunderson, but also from Richie Hawtin's label Plus 8 and the artist there like Speedy J, Kenny Larkin etc. Europe also had a big impact on him with artists like Stefan Roberts, 808 state, KLF, dreadzone, Terry lee brown Junior, Tikiman & labels like Plastic city, Poker Flat, SVEK, Circulation, early Network releases + many more. Also a lot of reggae & dub artist like Augustus Pablo, Lee Perry, Mad Professor, Andy Horace, King Tubby, Barrington levy + many more.
Future:
A couple of 12" are also to be released this year on labels like: Middle rec, KGBeats, Zebra3, Sensei +more.. Jeff is currently working on a new album wich will be released this autumn. And of course being a DJ as well brings a lot of inspiration & impressions to ones music from all the different places he visits creating new vibes and sounds.....

URBNET With over 40 releases how do you keep reinventing your sound?
Jeff Bennett Well in November last year I took a break from producing to do exactly that, reinvent. After a couple of months I was dying to get back at it. Im currently working on a new album and it feels great to be refreshed after the break and I have some fresh and more mature sounds.
How did the name Jeff Bennett come about since it's not your real name?
I was looking for a simple name that people could remember so I made up two big lists of first and last names and made the lists shorter and shorter, and whaablam "Jeff Bennett" was born.
You've had several of your own labels since your inception into electronic music in the early 90's, what have been some of your favorites and how is Kung Fu Dub coming along?
My first release ever was on my own label Maskros; I think that made a special impression on me that still lasts. Kung Fu Dub is still in the opening scene, all though it was started long ago. Its still kind of new but the heat is definitely growing, I got some good stuff lined up.
When opening your record store in Malmoe Sweden what did you expect during the first couple of years business wise?
I never had any long term plans with the shop; I guess it surprised me since I worked there for 8 years. After some time I started getting more and more into producing, which got the highest priority for me and still has it.
You and your business partner Jim Groovy started up many ventures but during your club night stint where were some of the most memorable evenings spent?
Definitely the Club we were running every Friday for over a year (Thank God Its Friday) 1999-2000, so many crazy nights! Amazing how some many people fit into such a small place. Hard to pick a single night during its run but it has of the strongest memories from the past.
