URBNET: Why did you move into production after DJing for so long?
K-Bana:To be honest I started Djing quite young, i.e 14. So when i first started wanting to make my own music I was 18, and it was a natural progression for me. At that time the industry was mostly vinyl based so having your own track out on a 12 inch was something quite special. And at that time you really could shift some serious numbers if you got a good track out. So i saw it as the next step in my career, and a way of getting even more gigs in the future by getting my name out there.
Having your music featured on video games do you think that is the next medium for all new producers to break in after releasing records?
Well it certainly helps i think. There's big money out there if you can get on the right game. I was lucky enough with my remix of "Picture Me Falling" to get on Sony/Kinetic Eyetoys Fitness Game. It brought in a little bit of money. But the real money spinners are when u can get publishing for big EA type games. That doesn't happen a lot but when it does it's worth the effort.
With so many songs on Guess & Duffnote thus far do you think you will return to those labels or keep continuing to search for new and emerging labels like Ready Mix?
Yes for sure. In fact I have a couple of remixes and my new single "Lights & Stars" coming out sometime this year. Along with this I am aiming to work my way round some established and emerging labels. I have set my sights pretty high, as I want to be releasing on Freerange and Buzzin Fly in the coming years. That would be a real achievement for me.
Where do you attribute most of your sound from as it is so emotionally funky and still has an edge to it?
My style and sound has evolved over the years from something soulful and funky to progressive and deep now to a lot deeper and more jacking! I think it’s changed with age and experience. And ultimately what I listen to when I am in my car or on my I-Phone. I would attribute the core of my sound to people like Grant Nelson and Jimpster along with Terry Francis. I also used to listen to a lot of the sounds from Empire a local club that was based in Bognor Regis. I’d go there aged 15 and experience some of the best DJs in the world playing the best house music, and it definitely had a bearing on my sound today!
What have been some of your favourite local clubs to play at near your home town?
I live in a small city called Chichester on the South Coast of the UK. It’s a notoriously lovely place to live. However it massively lacks any real clubs. So I have to travel a fair distance to go anywhere decent. Mainly London or Brighton. But my favourite places to play have to be the White House in Clapham and Funky Buddha Lounge in Brighton. They are both full of people really into their music, slightly different in style but amazing on the night none the less.
In 2010 do you have any collaborations coming up with artists you’d like to work with?
In 2010 I aim to try and produce my first Album. That’s the main objective for me. I think I have got to a stage where I have all the material I need to make a cool album. So it’s just a case of trying to get it started.
On the collaborations front I am working with Bamo from Spiritchaser on a new project called Feel 3. It’s a slightly different sound to my normal stuff, but it’s still got of K-Bana elements to it. We are currently just finishing the first single, which has a Mr Cenzo Remix. And hopefully it will be coming out later this year.
