Album Review - Urbnet.com - Aug 2003
Various Artists - Bassments of Badmen Vol. 2 [Hand Solo Records/urbnet records]
as reviewed by Bradley Miller

The first volume of this series was released in 1996 and introduced the world to Halifax, Nova Scotia’s talented scene (including
early work by Buck 65, Classified and Sixtoo), and is probably a coveted eBay collectors item by now. Seven years later
Hand’Solo Records strike back with their second installment of up-and-coming avant-garde hip-hop from Canada, and they’ve
added some American talent as well. There are a few familiar names (including Vice scribe Fritz Tha Cat and Plague Language’s
Noah23), but for the most part, these are unknowns. The production and lyrics often fall into the “leftfield” category, a mix of Hiero
coolness and Kool Keith’s bugged-out, sci-fi endeavors. SJ The Wordburglar earns top marks for both his moniker and flow, and
packs enough charisma on “”Wordburglar” to make Motion Man and KutMasta Kurt envious. Elsewhere, Mindbender impresses
on his solo track “Fearless” as do The IF? and Thesis on their respective songs, “The Prosecution Rests” and “Teen Idols”. Much
like the Aberfoyle Springs compilation in 2001, Bassments Of Badmen Volume Two showcases a number of promising
under-the-radar talents, and is worthy of repeated spins. [Bradley Miller]
