Various Artists - Bassments of Badmen Vol. 2 [Hand Solo Records/urbnet records]

as reviewed by Jeff Cann

Still living in the era of De La Soul, Eric B. and Rakim and Public Enemy, new Hip Hop has not entirely been my scene and only in a few cases over the last 10 years has it inspired me. The Bassments of Badmen Vol. 2 put out by Toronto’s own Hand Solo Records did manage to put a smile on my face.

The 20 track compilation features some fine Toronto underground talent as well as show casing a few artists from Halifax, Japan and the U.S. Hand Solo Records (who brought us Buck 65, Moka Only and Sixtoo) has strung together a talented roster for this compilation. The cd is full of clever lyrics, “I think its best you go back to lip singing my perfect classics alone in your basement”, the spoken word is sharp and the flow is wicked. More importantly, they have steered clear of the ‘look at me’ gangster rap scene which lost it’s bite a decade ago. - Jeff Cann
