Album Review - Thick Online - July 2003
Various Artists - Bassments of Badmen Vol. 2 [Hand Solo Records/urbnet records]
as reviewed by N/A

Hip-Hop is full of the journeyman, even more so in Canada. Hard to get love in the cold deep North. I bring this up because
one of the only familiar groups on here, Supreme Being Unit, are just that, journeymen. And not organized tour shit, just travellin'
to get the name out, meet like minds. Conspiracy and Mindbender have got down with some like minds here for sure. East coast,
boundary-pusher emcees that have been forced to make their own beats because of lack of single-minded producers. Creature
Box feed us a Ciggaret Butt Sandwitch that seems to beat-jack directly from Co-Flow’s ‘Little Johnny From the Hospital’ but
the emcees are some of the better on this disc…even the song-songy shit is cool. Toolshed sound like vintage Organized Rhyme,
and to me that’s dope. One dude freaks Bones’ wildstyle, allbeit with much better lyricism. I’d love to hear OR in 2003; Pin is
gangsta in Vancouver now and Tom is obviously paid in the shade. Word Burgular also stuck out, he has some humorous lines
and doesn’t seem to take himself too seriously. I don’t know if this represents the future of Canadian Hip-Hop but it does shed
light on some emcees that might’ve otherwise stayed unknown.
