Animal Nation is a hip hop duo from Whistler, BC -- one part Tall Man Clare, one part Mike Armadillo Slim Armitage, two wild animals of men. Tall Man grew up on a farm with 3 dads and worked as the farm scarecrow for his first 12 summers. He has been married three times, almost four, if you count his “almost husband.” Sometimes late at night Tall Man can’t help but wonder if Armadillo Slim is just a figment of his imagination.
Wait. Scratch almost everything I just said. I should probably check some of those facts.
Animal Nation is a Western Canadian Music Award nominated group who combine drum machines, turntables, guitars, harmonicas, bacon & eggs, sampling, banjos, and hilarity to create a hip hop show unlike anything you've ever seen before. Animal Nation has toured North America over 10 times, ending up in the hospital almost that many times -- despite all the medical marijuana they smoke.
Most recently Animal Nation have toured the U.S. and Canada with Swollen Members and Canada with Tech N9ne. This November they are opening for YelaWolf and Ritzz in Whistler and Vancouver before heading to Europe for a 10-show tour. Animal Nation have rocked numerous festivals including the Telus Ski and Snowboard Festival, NXNE, Kokanee Crankworx, the Pemberton Festival, and the Vancouver Island Folk Music Festival.
When I asked Tall Man to describe Animal Nation’s music he said “Derp derp derp, rainbows, kittens, lollipops.” ... which is actually wildly accurate. When I probed further he just kept screaming “Fun. Fun. Fun. FUN. FUN. HAPPY. FUN! HAPPY! PARTY! HAPPY!! AWESOME!!! despondent. FUN!! PARTY! Amazing. Party. fun.” Hm, I think that means they just like to make music and have a lot of fun, on the road, in the studio and on stage.
Animal Nations raps about everything from lasagna to cocaine found in hotel bibles. Their music is upbeat and more than likely drug-induced. Lyrics about cigarettes and chocolate milk, releasing albums on 420 - -totally their style, in particular when collaborating with Saskatoon band Sly Business on a beauty of an album they made together, titled “Don’t Grow Up To Be Like Us”.
Can’t wait to see what these freaks of nature get up to next. Watch out world, Animal Nation is on the loose and tranquilizer darts seem to do nothing! --
