Anonymous Twist - Through the Looking Glass op [soul.on.rice records/urbnet records]

as reviewed by charlie bucket

"Through The Looking Glass" is Anonymous Twist's second album (his first was 2000's "Eugenics") and like "Eugenics" he produces all the beats.

He could probably make a living producing for other people. As fans of the east coast sound will like his production style. He will give you a nice loop and scratch a chorus, sometimes made from two different records. It's nothing revolutionary but if done well as he does on this album you're good to go.

Anonymous Twist might have improved the album if he took his best beats then looked somewhere else for others to produce a few joints to shake things up on the album a little. He does switch things up a little bit but a little more variety would help. Another thing I would change is to cut some of his interludes; he has seven. When are people going to realize the only person that should be allowed to do an interlude is Prince Paul?

Twist's flow and voice reminds me of Evidence of Dilated Peoples, but with more personality. He does have some versatility as an MC too: he gives you the talk shit raps and he can be more introspective. And on some songs he comes strong, others he is just having fun.

One of the standout cuts is "Ramblin Soul" where Anonymous Twist shows some emotion over a nice chill out beat.

"Fuck a plastic pleasure / I only plant seeds that will last forever / cause I wont, no matter how I live / but I realize I'm that branch between the trunk and the twig / thinking big within my own means / sewing my own seams living my own dreams / hidin' my tears, grinding my gears / gave up 15 minutes of fame so I could shine for years"

Although it isn't without its faults "Through The Looking Glass" has some dope beats and Anonymous Twist has some nice rhymes. What else do you want?
