MUTEK News - 9th Edition Roundup

MUTEK 2008 FESTIVAL ROUNDUP
MUTEK @ SONAR 2008
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

** MUTEK 2008 FESTIVAL ROUNDUP **

Now that we’ve taken a couple of weeks to reflect upon the 9th edition of MUTEK, we are pleased to announce our immense satisfaction with this year’s presentation of the festival. The 2008 festival was swept by a refreshing wind of renewed purpose and direction, a characteristic of its high-caliber artists, its diverse and international programming, and the general consensus that this year’s events resulted in a decisive evolution over past editions. This year’s results significantly surpassed expectations; the heightened interest in each of the venues was palpable, coinciding with a remarkable increase of 50% of the public in the evening venues. Festival-goers came out in greater numbers than ever before to participate in both daytime and evening events, and sales of the MUTEK_PASSPORT hit an all-time record this year.

We would like to take this occasion to send out a warm thank you to everyone who helped make 2008 such an exhilarating edition. In terms of production value, talent, programming, and presence within our hometown of Montreal and around the world, this year’s festival ranks among the most gratifying undertakings this organization has ever mounted. We would have liked a bit more control over the weather, but pretty much every other detail had the good fortune of going our way. And none of it would have been possible without the massively talented artists currently at work in all corners of electronic music, and the dedicated fans, media, partnerships and professionals who support them.

The most significant achievement of this year’s edition, without doubt, was the festival’s confirmation as a powerful draw for cultural tourists. According to figures provided by the market-research firm CROP, MUTEK has surpassed its previous results with an astounding 47% of festival attendees coming from outside Montreal and a full 42% arriving from outside Quebec. Records for indoor venue attendance were shattered across the board, without exception, confirming MUTEK’s growing status as an engine of Montreal’s cultural tourism. For those of you who traveled to our city for the festival, we were glad to see you once again - our recurring cast of international guests have become part of the MUTEK family. Whether you arrived at MUTEK from Berlin, Paris, Mexico City, Toronto, or New York, you helped make this a record-breaking year for the festival’s internationalism: that makes you the lifeblood of our efforts.

MUTEK 2008 proved to be a pivotal year in which eclecticism took the festival to new heights. The sheer diversity of performances tells the story, from the rigorous turntable science of Martin Tétreault to the stadium-sized beat-carvings of Kid Koala, from the wonky hip-hop of Flying Lotus to the bass friction of Kode 9 & the Spaceape, from highlight live performances by Underground Resistance, The Field, and Modeselektor to brilliant international discoveries like Ben Frost, Danton Eeprom, and Chloe. This year’s acts single-handedly shattered the stale and perception that a live performance of electronic music has to be austere and disengaged. Murcof, Morgan Packard, Németh & Hess, Rechenzentrum, Tim Hecker, and Christian Fennesz all delivered disarming performances brimming with artistry, individuality, and passion. Furthermore, the visual mastery of Lillevan, Pfadfinderei, Joshue Ott, Artificiel, and many of our local videographers turned MUTEK 2008 into one of the most visually stunning environments we’ve ever showcased. Next year’s programming will continue the fine balance of developing new audiences while maintaining a high standard of credibility. Our ears are to the ground, and we intend to branch out within the numerous international pools of talent.

An increasingly influential factor of MUTEK’s continued success is the online community that consistently supports us. We’ve spent the past three months rolling out a new and refurbished internet presence, with more music and features from the acts we find relevant, and the blogging and online magazine communities have responded in kind by getting behind the festival and carrying us into those pockets of fans all across the world. The virtual community made this festival the international success story it was this year.

Established online sources like Last.FM, XLR8R, Beatportal, Resident Advisor, Earplug, Baltimore City Paper’s Noise Blog, and Pitchfork Media, not to mention the ever-extended support of the CBC and Radio-Canada, played an important role in this year’s events. An important creative and compelling support also came from independent blogging networks like Create Digital Music, Basic Sounds, Brightest Young Things, Serial Consign, and the numerous individuals who took the time and effort to deliver considered and lengthy reviews, photo galleries, and videos of this year’s events.

To get an idea of what the festival felt like and how it has been covered this year, here’s a selection of links:
* Techno expert Philip Sherburne reviews MUTEK 08 at Pitchfork
* Baltimore City Paper’s Noise blog delivers in-depth day-by-day coverage, courtesy of Michael Byrne: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4
*Beatportal runs a series of interviews with MUTEK 08 artists Danton Eeprom, Noah Pred, Nôze and Deadbeat, courtesy of Amanda Connon-Unda
*Resident Advisor features a podcast of Nôze’s live set on Sunday
*XLR8R’s Ken Taylor breaks down this year’s events in two installments: Part 1 & Part 2
*Brightest Young Things features a detailed review and photo & video gallery of MUTEK 2008
*Basic Sounds blog features an extensive photo gallery
*Serial Consign has a long, considered review
*And in perhaps the most in-depth coverage of the fest, Create Digital Music’s Peter Dines and Liz McLean Knight provide reviews, interviews, photos, and video of everything MUTEK-related

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be posting our own photos and exclusive video footage from the 2008 festivities, so please keep an eye on www.mutek.org.

Of course, such large-scale and richly textured undertakings would not even be possible without the crucial support of our many dedicated partners, both in the public and private sectors. The unwavering support of the municipal, provincial, and federal government prove to us that MUTEK is an integral part of both Quebec and Canada’s cultural fabric, while the assistance of the many foreign embassies highlight the strong network of cross-cultural interest in the work we do. But what helps MUTEK excel beyond this foundation is the generous and oftentimes creative partnerships with likeminded organizations from the private sector, all of whom see the artistic uses of technology as the way of the future.

Furthermore, this year MUTEK undertook an initiative to gather almost twenty international festival programmers from Europe, North America, and South America in Montreal for a pioneering dialogue regarding the creation of an unprecedented global network of cultural exchange. Festivals present included:
*Club Transmediale - Berlin/Germany
*Dis-Patch - Belgrade/Serbia
*Futuresonic - Manchester/UK
*Musikprotokoll - Graz/Austria
*Numusic - Stavanger/Norway
*Skanu Mezs - Riga/Latvia
*Today’s Art - Den Haag/Netherlands
*Les Siestes Électroniques - Toulouse/France
*Unsound - Cracow/Poland
*New Forms - Vancouver/Canada
*Communikey - Boulder/USA
*Decibel - Seattle/USA
*MUTEK.MX - Mexico
*MUTEK.AR - Buenos Aires/ Argentina

The result of these sessions was the xxxxxxion of ICAS (International Cities of Advanced Sound), a new network of international not-for-profit events dedicated to promoting emerging forms of media to new audiences and regions. This endeavour will be formally introduced in the fall of 2008, and take on more definitive and effective shape throughout 2009.

Speaking of next year, in 2009 MUTEK celebrates its tenth anniversary. You can bet we’re planning something special, and we hope to see you all here for what is expected to be the exciting and memorable climax of our first decade. Mark your calendars: May 27th to May 31st, 2009. More details to come.

** MUTEK @ SONAR 2008 **
A MUTEK deleguation will be going to the SONAR festival in Barcelona next week. Notably present will be Alain Mongeau (Festival Director), Audrey Powell (Marketing & Development), Damian Romero (MUTEK Mexico) and Michel Pontbriand (Musique Risquée Label Manager). We’ll be busy holding a booth in the SONAR PRO zone and happy to network, so please stop by Stand 34 and say hello!

New Naked Music album available now!

NAKED MUSIC DELIVERS SEXY SUMMER SOUNDS WITH NEW ALBUM RE-CREATION
When Naked Music burst onto the scene in 1998 with their now-classic debut album, What’s On Your Mind, they never could have predicted that what started as a group of forward thinking musicians would go on to create a legacy that would change the landscape of electronic music over the following ten years.

The creative collective, fronted by Jay Denes (aka Blue Six) will release their new album Re-Creation, on July 8, 2008. Imbued with a new level of intensity throughout its downtempo jams, the album also showcases the eclectic soundscapes that Naked Music is known for: an alluring mixture of Soul, Brazilian, Electronic, and Dance music.

Since establishing their namesake label, Denes has been responsible for much of Naked Music’s output in recent years (Beautiful Tomorrow, Aquarian Angel), not to mention his much lauded remixes for such artists as Sade and Maxwell.

Re-Creation reunites Denes with longtime collaborators Mark Anthony Jones (Summerland, Lisa Shaw), Dave Boonshoft (Blue Six), Saul Rubin (Aya), jazz legend Catherine Russell (Blue Six) and newcomer Tabitha Fair. This collection of funky and atmospheric gems is the perfect accessory for a summer day by the poolside or late night hangs at a downtown lounge.

Re-Creation opens with "Pleasure Seeker", a super-sexy slow groove that sets the tone for the rest of the set delivering the signature sultry and soulful sound that defines Naked Music. From the percussive onslaught of "Heroin Chic", featuring the woozy vocals of Mark Anthony Jones to the Brazilian jam "Samba Contigo", Re-creation is it a fitting way to celebrate ten years of Naked Music.

Movement 08 Announces Festival Attendance, Recycling Program Success

MOVEMENT 08 DETROIT’S ELECTRONIC MUSIC FESTIVAL DANCES TO RECORD
BREAKING ATTENDANCE AND INAUGURAL RECYCLING PROGRAM COLLECTS MORE THAN 3,000 POUNDS OF RECYCLABLES

Detroit, Michigan, June 11, 2008 Paxahau, producers of Movement 08 Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival, announced today that Attendance of this year’s three-day festival surpassed 80,000, Toppling last year’s attendance and exceeding the set goal of 60,000. Attendance numbers were based on implementing the use of turnstiles and tracking festival VIP’s as well. This year marked the first time the festival tracked attendance using turnstiles.

’We anticipated a surge in attendance, as presales were triple what they were last year three weeks before the festival’, stated Jason Huvaere, festival director, Paxahau Promotions Group. ’It’s amazing to now have actual attendance numbers that equate to real economic benefits for the City of Detroit, as well as the festival, and exhibits the venues true capacity.

On top of attendance success, the recycling program instituted by Paxahau collected more than 3,000 pounds of recyclables including plastic, fiber, and cans over the three-day event. Paxahau teamed up with Recycle Detroit, a non profit organization founded by Detroiter Sarah Kubik; Omar S. George of WasteONE in Clinton Township; and Great Lakes Recycling of Roseville to collect recyclable materials.

The festival had approximately 10 recycling tents, staffed with volunteers that collected cans, bottles, and paper. Great Lakes Recycling, offering single stream capabilities, stored and processed all the recyclable materials, and once separated, the recyclables were transferred to a single location for further processing.

Huvaere added, We experienced a remarkable and memorable event this year. Reaction from everyone involved, including sponsors, artists, media, and fans was incredibly positive. We definitely set a new benchmark for the festival, and I am excited about planning next year’s event.

Movement interest, on all levels, was a direct result of Paxahau’s dedication and hard work to continually upgrade the festival experience, from the artist line-up to the drastically enhanced sound systems as well as upgraded staging to protect from inclement weather.

Much of the anticipation surrounding Movement 08 was generated by one of the strongest lineups the festival has had in its history. This year’s roster of performers included Moby, Benny Benassi, Carl Craig, Richie Hawtin, Deadmau5, James Zabiela, Dubfire, and critically acclaimed artists such as The Cool Kids, Marco Carola, Peanut Butter Wolf and Cobblestone Jazz.

We’re all about showcasing renowned, established artists while also giving up-and-coming talent an opportunity to reach a broader audience, said Huvaere. Most important, however, the festival further expands Detroit’s reputation for inspiring the electronic music scene and the foundation for the creative renaissance being led by electronic music artists everywhere who recognize the importance of being a part of this cultural phenomenon.

Upcoming Paxahau events:
Friday, July 4th at 6:00 p.m. Cityfest, Pure Detroit Stage,
Paxahau Presents King Britt and Ryan Elliott

Labor Day Weekend - Paxahau Ten Year Anniversary

Since 1998 Paxahau has promoted electronic music and has grown to include a web archive, booking agency, record label and an event production company which produces an average of 12 events a year. With a network of alliances and resources that span the globe, Paxahau has emerged as a premier promotions group within the electronic music industry. Paxahau is committed to further establishing the Detroit Electronic Music Festival as North America’s most prominent electronic music venue, which will continue to be a foundation for the creative renaissance being led by electronic music artists everywhere. Freerange June 08

Various Artists
Jimpster - Selected Remixes 2004-2008 - F RCD21 2xCD (Mixed and Unmixed)
With 15 years of DJing and production behind him and over 100 releases on his Freerange label, now seems an apt moment to release a collection of some of the best of Jimpster’s remixes from the last four years. Jimpster, aka Jamie Odell, is one of the key figures pushing forward the deeper sound of house, proving that it needs to be neither fast nor brash to induce that uncontrollable sense of musical intoxication that makes your heart sing and your feet bounce

Opening with the cosmic disco of Tam Cooper’s ’Galactica’, Disk One builds up through the rousing pianos of Joris Voorn’s ’The Deep’, the urgent strings of Kiko Navarro’s ’Siempre’, and the beguiling US influenced grooves of Delano Smith’s ’Message For The DJ’, before the blissed-out, halcyon tones of Iz & Diz’s ’Love Vibe’ kick in. Jimpster’s haunting mix of Justin Martin’s ’The Sad Piano’ breaks your heart like your first girlfriend, before Akabu’s ’I’m Not Afraid Of The Future’ picks you up, dusts you down, and gets you on your dancing feet again. Other artists getting the Jimpster treatment here include the excellent Motorcitysoul, Solomun, Kurd Maverick, Lo:Rise and Carlos Gibbs & Mike Acetate. Disk Two will keep the DJs happy, providing an almost identical track listing but in a useful unmixed xxxxxx.
